Governance: the accountability structure that makes AI use sustainable

• AI Governance and Oversight is the control and accountability structure that sits across the four cognitive patterns, keeping AI use safe, auditable and aligned with organisational values. Without governance, AI use becomes unmonitored shadow infrastructure. With it, AI use becomes manageable and defendable.
• The work covers policy, monitoring, audit trail design, escalation paths and the operational practices that turn principles into discipline. Different cognitive patterns need different governance: Cognitive Partnership needs different oversight than Encapsulated Utility, even within the same organisation. The structure has to fit the work it is governing.
• Governance is the lens that boards and regulators ask about, and the answer cannot be retrofitted. Designed from the start, it makes adoption sustainable. Bolted on later, it slows decisions and erodes trust. Strategy engagements often include a governance review, and standalone governance work brings existing AI use under a coherent framework.
