Engineering
How production AI is engineered when no human is present at runtime
The software-engineering disciplines that operationalise runtime governance for Agency and Utility, the two patterns where no human is present at the moment of action.
Overview
Engineering as the discipline of trustworthy runtime behaviour
- In Partnership and Delegation a human is present at the moment of action, reviewing each outcome before it leaves the work. In Agency and Utility that human is not present: the AI initiates work from a standing mandate, or is invoked by surrounding software against a design-time specification. The mandate and the specification are the only places where human judgement enters the system, and engineering is the discipline that translates those upstream artefacts into trustworthy runtime behaviour. The split between presence and absence is what makes engineering-grade governance non-negotiable for these two patterns, and what distinguishes the discipline from ordinary application engineering applied to AI components.
- The discipline covers a coherent body of production practice: testing of mandates and specifications, monitoring that substitutes for in-the-moment review, versioning that gives every behavioural change provenance, change control that authorises modifications to runtime behaviour, incident response for the cases the design did not anticipate, and graceful degradation that ensures the surrounding system fails into a safe state when the AI is wrong. The organising stance behind these practices is designing around failure: the system is built on the assumption that the AI will sometimes be wrong, and the engineering does the work of making that wrongness recoverable rather than unbounded.
- The practices are familiar from production software engineering, retargeted at AI components and AI-shaped systems where a non-deterministic actor is in the loop and no human is. Engineering is the discipline that decides whether an AI in production is trustworthy. It is the body of practice that turns a mandate from a hopeful sentence into something an organisation can defend, and a specification from a description into a contract the runtime will honour. Without it, an Agency or Utility deployment is a black box that nobody can reason about until it fails, and at that point the conversation with the business is much harder because the failure has been running for an unknown length of time.
