Agency
Self-directed AI action within a human-defined mandate
Autonomous Agency is the pattern in which the AI acts on its own initiative within a human-defined mandate.
Overview
Autonomous Agency: AI as a self-directed actor inside a defined mandate
- Autonomous Agency describes a way of working in which the AI operates independently within boundaries the human has defined, making its own decisions about how to pursue agreed objectives. The human defines the mandate. The AI then works inside it proactively, identifying the work that falls within scope, deciding how to approach it, and proceeding.
- The pattern suits classes of work that can be bounded by a clear mandate: customer service triage handled end to end, operational alert triage, financial reconciliation within agreed limits, document-processing pipelines that classify and route. The human's role shifts from collaborator inside the work to supervisor sitting outside it. Mandate design becomes the load-bearing decision.
- Agency runs more independently than Delegation, where each unit of work begins with a human handoff. It also differs from Utility, where the AI is invoked from outside as an encapsulated component. The defining feature is bounded autonomy: AI acting on its own initiative inside a mandate that governs a class of work over time.
